Planning acne scar treatment while living in Hanoi

· 7 min read· Written by the CHAMING Skinlab team

A realistic acne scar plan in Hanoi runs in three stages: calm active breakouts, complete a course of resurfacing sessions spaced weeks apart, then review a few months later. Collagen keeps rebuilding after the last session. Starting the laser-heavy part in the duller months from January to April makes the sun-sensitive recovery easier.

Skin is easier to judge in person. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book a course.

What does a realistic acne scar plan look like?

Think in stages rather than sessions. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that if you still have breakouts, a plan will usually begin with treating the acne, because stopping breakouts reduces inflammation and prevents new scars. Resurfacing skin that is still inflamed tends to make things worse, not better.

  • Stage one: bring active acne under control before any scar work begins.
  • Stage two: a course of microneedling or fractional CO2 laser, with sessions roughly a month apart.
  • Stage three: a review around three months after the last session, once collagen has had time to rebuild.

When in the year should you start in Hanoi?

If laser is part of your plan, start it in the duller months. Hanoi averages only about 1.5 to 3 hours of sunshine a day from January to April, against 5.5 to 6.5 hours from May to October, according to Climates to Travel. Fewer bright days make it easier to keep healing skin out of the sun.

That matters because freshly treated skin marks easily. The American Academy of Dermatology advises against laser treatment on tanned or sunburnt skin, and warns that sun reaching skin that is still healing can leave a new scar. A beach trip to Nha Trang or Phú Quốc belongs before the course or after it, not in the middle.

Microneedling is gentler on this front and can run through summer if you are strict with sunscreen. Look at the calendar too: a week of flaking after laser is easier in a quiet week than in the run-up to Tết.

Laser or microneedling: which fits a working week?

Depth decides the tool, and the tool decides the downtime. Fractional CO2 laser does more per session on deeper boxcar scars, but expect two to three days of redness and heat, then five to seven days of fine flaking. Microneedling suits shallow rolling scars and usually costs you a day of redness.

Booking laser at the end of the week puts the worst of the redness over a weekend. Makeup goes back on once the flaking has finished, not before.

Narrow, deep ice pick scars respond least to either on its own. If you are not sure which kind you have, our guide to which treatment suits which scar explains the three shapes.

How should you look after your skin between sessions?

Between sessions, the job is protection rather than more treatment. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day, and reapply about every two hours when you are outdoors or sweating, as the American Academy of Dermatology recommends. In a Hanoi summer, the sweating part comes round quickly.

Cloud is not protection either: up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can pass through it, according to the same source. Keep the area moisturised, do not pick at flaking skin, and leave scrubs and exfoliating acids alone until it has fully settled.

Tell the team before a session if any of these apply, because each one means waiting or checking first:

  • You take oral isotretinoin, or stopped less than six months ago. Check with your prescriber first.
  • The skin in the area is infected, blistered, broken or recently sunburnt.
  • You have had a peel, laser or microneedling elsewhere in the last two weeks.
  • Your acne is flaring widely and painfully again.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What will the whole course cost?

Work it out as the price per session multiplied by the number of sessions your skin needs, and ask for that total before you start. CHAMING publishes the per-session price of every scar treatment on its price page, from the same system the studio bills from. You see that figure before you commit to anything.

The number of sessions is set after your skin has been looked at, and the consultation, including a skin analysis, is free. Be wary of any course length quoted before anyone has seen your skin.

What result is realistic?

Aim for a smoother surface in normal light, not a face that looks as if the acne never happened. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear that laser treatment can make a scar less noticeable but cannot get rid of it. Any promise of complete removal should make you cautious.

Judge progress with photos taken in the same light, before the first session and again about three months after the last one. Change that builds over months is hard to see in a mirror you look into every day.

Common questions

Can I start acne scar treatment while I still get breakouts?

Usually not. A plan normally begins by bringing breakouts under control, because resurfacing inflamed skin can make it worse and new spots can leave new scars.

Is summer a bad time for acne scar laser in Hanoi?

It is harder, not impossible. Hanoi gets far more daily sunshine from May to October than from January to April, and healing skin must stay out of the sun. If you cannot avoid the sun, start with microneedling or wait for the duller months.

How far apart are the sessions?

Roughly a month apart for most scar work, so the skin has time to repair between visits. The exact spacing depends on the treatment and on how your skin recovers.

Do I need time off work?

Not for microneedling, where a day of redness is typical. For fractional CO2, plan for two to three days of redness followed by about a week of flaking, and keep makeup off until it finishes.

When will I know if it worked?

Around three months after your last session. Collagen keeps rebuilding after the treatment ends, so the result keeps improving well after the final visit.
