HIFU lifting in Hanoi: what it does and what it cannot

· 6 min read· Written by the CHAMING Skinlab team

HIFU focuses ultrasound energy below the skin's surface to prompt new collagen, which can firm mild to moderate slackness along the jaw, cheeks and neck without cuts or downtime. It is not a facelift. Results build over three to six months, and it suits skin that has only started to loosen.

Skin is easier to judge in person. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book a course.

What does HIFU actually do?

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The handpiece concentrates ultrasound into small points at set depths under the skin and heats them enough to start a repair response. As that repair lays down new collagen over the following months, loose skin firms and lifts a little. The surface is left intact.

Cleveland Clinic, writing about Ultherapy, one well-known brand of focused ultrasound, describes the aim as lifting and tightening loose skin by stimulating collagen in a deep layer beneath it. It lists the brow line, the neck and the area under the chin among the usual targets. At our studio it is used for slackness along the cheeks, jawline and neck.

The word to hold on to is gradual. The heat does its work within minutes, but the change you see comes from collagen that takes months to form.

Who is HIFU for, and who should wait?

HIFU suits skin that has started to slacken, not skin that has dropped a long way. Cleveland Clinic describes the typical candidate as someone in their 30s or older with mild to moderate laxity. It also says plainly that it is not a replacement for a surgical facelift. Heavy jowls or folds of neck skin are a surgical conversation.

Tell the team before booking if any of these apply, because each one means checking first rather than starting on the day:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have metal implants or an electronic device in your body.
  • You take oral isotretinoin, or stopped less than six months ago. Check with your prescriber first.
  • The skin in the area is infected, blistered, broken or recently sunburnt.

What does a session feel like, and is there downtime?

Most people feel short bursts of heat or tingling as each line of energy goes in, and little in between. A session with us takes about an hour. The energy is adjusted by area, and you can ask for it to be turned down at any point. Comfort is part of doing it properly.

Cleveland Clinic notes that there is usually no downtime. Slight redness for up to an hour is common, and some people get mild swelling, bruising or tenderness. The tenderness can last up to a month. Most people go back to work the same day.

Because nothing is broken on the surface, there is no peeling week to plan around. That is the main practical difference from resurfacing lasers.

When will you see results, and how long do they last?

Some people see a small change straight away, but the real result comes from new collagen, and that takes months. Cleveland Clinic says full results may take three to six months to show. If you want to look your best for a particular date, book about three months ahead of it, not three days.

The result is not permanent. Skin keeps ageing after treatment, so people who like the effect come back for a touch-up rather than starting over. How often depends on your skin, and it is worth asking what a sensible interval looks like for you before you start.

Judge it with photos, not memory. Take one in the same light before the session and again at three months, because gradual change is hard to see in a mirror you look into every day.

How do you plan HIFU around life in Hanoi?

With no downtime, HIFU fits into a working week more easily than most anti-ageing treatments. CHAMING is in Đống Đa, about 10 minutes from Hoàn Kiếm Lake by car, and an English-speaking member of the team is on every shift. An hour-long session plus travel fits into an afternoon.

Sun is the part that undoes the result. Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can pass through cloud, which matters in a city as overcast as Hanoi. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning protects what the treatment builds.

If you are combining HIFU with peels, microneedling or laser, space them out rather than stacking them in one week. If you are leaving Vietnam, the change keeps developing after you go, so keep a note of the areas treated for any future touch-up.

What should you ask before booking HIFU in Hanoi?

Prices and promises vary widely between studios, so a few questions before you lie down save money and disappointment. A good studio answers all of them without hesitation, and tells you when HIFU is the wrong tool for what you see in the mirror.

  • Which areas are being treated: one area you choose, or the full face and neck?
  • What is the total price for everything being treated, confirmed before the session starts?
  • Who performs the treatment, and how is the energy adjusted if it is too uncomfortable?
  • Is there a skin check first, and what happens if HIFU does not suit you?
  • Do they ask about implants, recent sunburn and acne medication? They should.

How is HIFU priced, and what should the total include?

HIFU is usually priced by how much of the face and neck is treated, so compare the total for the areas you want rather than a headline figure. We offer it two ways: MiniLift treats one area you choose, and C Lift covers the face and neck together.

Both are priced per session on our price page, which reads from the same system the studio bills from. No figure appears only once you are on the bed.

The consultation and skin check are free and carry no obligation, and the total is confirmed before anything starts.

Common questions

Does HIFU hurt?

For most people it is uncomfortable rather than painful: brief heat or tingling during each pass of energy. The setting is adjusted by area, and you can ask for it to be turned down at any point.

Is there downtime after HIFU?

Usually none. Slight redness for up to an hour is common, and mild swelling or tenderness can follow. Tenderness may linger for up to a month, but most people go back to work the same day.

How long do HIFU results last?

Results build over three to six months and are not permanent, because skin keeps ageing. A touch-up is how people keep the effect.

Can HIFU replace a facelift?

No. It suits mild to moderate slackness. Significant sagging is a surgical question, and a good studio will say so rather than sell you a session.

Can I have HIFU while taking isotretinoin?

Not straight away. If you take oral isotretinoin or stopped less than six months ago, check with your prescriber first and tell the team when you book.
