Why it is cheaper here, and what that does not mean
Price differences between Vietnam and higher-income countries come largely from rent and labour, not from cutting corners on the device. Diode laser platforms used in Hanoi are typically the same families of machine sold worldwide.
What genuinely varies between places is the person holding the handpiece: how many hours of training they have, whether settings are adjusted to your skin or left on a house default, and whether anyone looks at your skin before the first pulse. That is where you should be spending your attention, not on brand names printed on the machine.
Two ways packages are sold, and why it changes the price
The common model in Hanoi is a block of sessions — eight or ten, paid up front, used within a set window. The problem is that hair grows in cycles, and the number of sessions a body actually needs varies a lot between people. Buy eight, need eleven, and you are back at the counter.
The other model sells time rather than sessions: a package covers one area for a fixed term, with no cap on visits inside it. If your hair needs more passes than average, they are included. When you compare quotes, work out the cost per year of coverage, not the cost per session — the two rank very differently.
Is it safe on tanned or darker skin?
Laser targets pigment in the follicle. Tanned skin holds more pigment near the surface, absorbs more heat and burns more easily, which is why a good studio asks about recent sun exposure and postpones if needed. Living in a hot climate makes this a practical question rather than a theoretical one.
Darker skin tones are not a barrier in themselves, but they narrow the safe settings and make the choice of wavelength matter more, and the main risks are burns and, rarely, lasting changes in skin colour. A place that checks your skin and adjusts energy per person is doing the job properly. A place that gives everyone the same settings is not, no matter how well reviewed it is.
What results actually look like
Most people notice visibly thinner, slower regrowth from around the third session on underarms, and a little later on the bikini line (women only at CHAMING). Hormone-driven hair takes longer and may need occasional top-ups indefinitely; fine or light-coloured hair also responds less well than thick, dark hair.
Anyone promising permanent removal of every follicle is overselling. What is realistic is a large, lasting reduction, and honest studios describe it that way.
Before and after each session
- Two to four weeks before: no strong sun on the area, no self-tanner.
- Same window: stop waxing, plucking and epilating. The laser needs the root to be there.
- Between sessions: no shaving, waxing, plucking or hair-removal cream at home. We shave the area at each visit; the one exception is a man's beard, where an electric shaver is fine.
- On the day: clean skin, no moisturiser, oil, perfume or deodorant on the area.
- After: expect mild redness for a few hours to a day or two. Skip hot showers, saunas, pools and the gym for about 48 hours, and use sunscreen on exposed treated skin.
Questions worth asking before you pay
